Blair Tuthill: Harnessing The Benefits of Technology
Blair Tuthill might be the only computer specialist who’s also a licensed plumber. But he’s not fixing pipes or installing taps these days. He’s in charge of the technology that is keeping CULLITON current, supporting daily operations and enhancing its trademark customer service.
Blair joined CULLITON in 1986, working in the former plumbing store and showroom, eventually earning his plumber’s licence. His natural affinity for computers soon developed into another area of expertise. Today, he’s CULLITON’s Director of IT.
In 1999, Blair helped the company switch from a mainframe computer system to a Windows network system, which has multiple advantages. One of them is the ability to track a customer’s entire service history, keep an inventory of their equipment and customize a maintenance schedule to keep it running. CULLITON is committed to harnessing the benefits of technology.
"If you want to provide good service, you have to be," says Blair. That’s why the company’s service technicians all carry smartphones, which simplify and speed up work orders. Trucks are also equipped with GPS systems so dispatchers always know where they are and who’s closest to an emergency call – and that equates to a faster response and less down time for the customer.
On construction projects, foremen all have iPads, which provide immediate access to information when they need it. "In the old days they’d have to come into the office to look up manuals; now they’re online," says Blair. "The bottom line is technology helps us work more efficiently and the customer is reaping the benefits."
